Easy Vegan Jackfruit Tacos

If you’ve never had jackfruit tacos before, you need to try them! You won’t believe there’s no meat, it’s so satisfying!

What is Jackfruit?

Meet the new vegan meat substitute in town! Jackfruit grows in parts of Asia and is the world’s largest fruit that can be found on a tree. This tropical fruit is quite sweet and tastes like mangoes. It’s often eaten raw or in desserts. Now you’re wondering… wait we’re going to make tacos with it?

We’re using canned unripe jackfruit which has not quite the same taste as raw jackfruit (it’s not sweet anymore).

Does Jackfruit Taste Like Meat?

I personally find that canned unripe jackfruit tastes like artichokes. It does not taste like meat BUT I will compare it with tofu. Jackfruit actually takes on the flavor of whatever you season it with.

Where to Buy Canned Jackfruit?

It’s becoming more and more popular and can be found in some grocery stores, natural food stores or even Asian stores.

You can also buy it on Amazon.

How to Make Jackfruit Tacos?

  1. Use canned jackfruit: It’s important that you find young green jackfruit in brine or in water, and not the sweet ripe kind in syrup.
  2. Remove excess of water: Open the canned jackfruit and transfer into a paper towel or tea towel. Press firmly with your hands and try to soak up as much water as possible.
  3. Shred the jackfruit meat. You can do so with a food processor and pulse a few times. Be careful, we don’t want to shred it too much, we still want a similar meat texture. You can also cut it finely on a chopping board. This is the technique I use the most.
  4. Cook it. We then heat a large pan over medium heat and sauté onion with olive oil. We add the spices, beer, tomato paste and garlic. That way, we will get tacos full of flavor. I also love to drizzle spicy sauce at the end.
  5. Serve it. Heat the tortillas and prepare the toppings in advance. Since it does not take long to cook the jackfruit meat, dinner will be ready to serve in no time.

To make pickled onions : slice 1/2 a red onion finely. Let it rest a couple of minutes and transfer into a jar to keep in the fridge.
